Veterans Wayside Park Improvements

Veterans Concept Plan.png

The Veterans Wayside Park beautification project will honor our veterans while creating an even more welcoming destination for our community. Veterans Wayside Park is located on Pinecrest Parkway/US1 between SW 100 Street and SW 112 Street.  On March 11, 2025, Village Council awarded the construction bid to a general contractor. Construction began in August 2025 with an expected completion date in early 2026. This project will enhance the Veterans Memorial area, expand the gathering space for events and reflection, and improve accessibility with ADA-compliant pathways so that everyone can fully enjoy the park.

A brand-new playground for children ages 2–12 will provide a safe and engaging place for families to play and connect. In addition, the installation of a bioswale system will naturally direct stormwater to the park’s existing pond, filtering and cleansing it, showcasing our commitment to sustainable park design.

The vision includes a charming stone wall that doubles as both seating and a beautiful barrier separating the park and its surroundings. The park will be landscaped with native plant species that not only beautify the grounds but also help manage stormwater runoff and define the park’s unique areas. Once complete, Veterans Wayside Park will be a serene oasis, a place of reflection, play, and community connection for generations to come.

Veterans Wayside Park Playground FAQ

Q: Why is the Village investing in a playground at Veterans Wayside Park?
A: The project came directly from resident feedback sessions and the Village’s Parks Master Plan, which identified a need for more walkable, neighborhood-scale playgrounds. Veterans Wayside Park currently has green space but no play features. The playground will provide a safe, modern space for children and families, increasing use of the park while improving the quality of life for nearby neighborhoods.

Q: How is the playground being funded?
A: Funding was approved as part of the FY 2024 budget and is not connected to the millage rate adopted this year. The $374,946.35 cost covers both the equipment and professional installation by Rep Services, Inc. The project is fully funded from an existing capital allocation set aside for Veterans Wayside Park improvements. No new funds are required.

Q: What does the playground cost include?
A: In addition to the play equipment, the cost covers site preparation, safety surfacing, age-appropriate structures, and professional installation that meets the latest safety and accessibility standards. The Village Manager noted during the September 16 Council meeting that additional features would have raised the cost to $450,000–$500,000, so the final design balances safety, function, and budget.

Q: Where will the playground be located in the park?
A: The playground will be set back significantly within the park and will be buffered by a new low coral wall facing the highway, along with new landscaping. This ensures both safety and a quieter experience for families while preserving green space and visibility.

Q: What is the total cost of the Veterans Wayside Park beautification project and what does it include?

A: The total cost of the project is $1,271,946.35. The Village has proactively designed the space to address community feedback, particularly regarding the park’s proximity to US-1. Safety is the top priority, including setting the playground significantly within the park and adding a low coral rock wall facing the highway. The Village is also addressing water quality in the lake, a vital stop for migratory wildlife, and is partnering with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden to introduce native orchids to the park’s trees. The final design serves multiple age groups and uses durable, modern materials.

Q: How was the design chosen?
A: The Parks and Recreation Department worked with playground professionals to create a design that serves multiple age groups, uses durable materials, and stays within the existing project budget.

Q: Will lighting be added to the park?
A: Yes, the revitalization plan includes new lighting for the park to enhance safety.
