BE READY: HURRICANE-SEASON CHECKLIST

  • Build Your Kit: Stock at least three days’ worth of water (one gallon per person per day), nonperishable food, medications, and extra batteries.

  • Know Your Zone: Identify your specific flood zone to understand your property’s vulnerability to rising waters.

  • Fortify Your Home: Install storm shutters, reinforce doors, and trim dead branches to reduce the risk of falling debris.

  • Special Needs & Pets: Make arrangements for family members with special needs, the elderly and pets in advance. Remember that not all shelters accept pets.

  • Heed all flash flood warnings and avoid traveling through flooded roadways.

  • Residents in flood-prone areas should remain especially vigilant and take precautions to protect their families, pets, and property.

  • Stay Informed: Monitor local news and alerts from the Village of Pinecrest and the National Hurricane Center.

UNDERSTANDING ALERTS

  • Hurricane Watch: Conditions are possible within 48 hours. This is the time to prepare, fuel your vehicle and make sure you have cash on hand.

  • Hurricane Warning: Conditions are expected within 36 hours. Take immediate action: stay indoors, move to an interior room and keep your emergency kit within reach.

POST-STORM RECOVERY

  • The Village’s Emergency Management Team activates during a storm to coordinate recovery efforts.

  • Residents can assist through:

  • Generator Safety: Always place generators at least 20 feet from the house with exhaust directed away from windows and doors.

  • Debris Placement: Place vegetation and storm debris at least six feet away from mailboxes and fences to allow collection trucks safe access.

  • Document Damage: Assess your property and document damage for insurance purposes once it is safe to do so.
