Prepare your business

Businesses that plan ahead reopen faster. Work through this checklist before June 1.

Records and data

  • Back up critical data and store a copy off site or in the cloud.

  • Make a complete inventory and photograph everything.

  • Protect computers and equipment from water damage.

  • Review your property, flood and business interruption insurance.

Employees

  • Keep employee emergency contacts current.

  • Set up a communication plan, including an out-of-town number employees can call to check in.

  • Write and post hurricane procedures so staff know what to do.

  • Give employees time to secure their own homes and families.

  • Identify a safe room for anyone who must stay in the building.

Operations and money

  • Keep extra cash and blank checks on hand.

  • Identify a temporary location to operate from if your space is damaged.

  • List key suppliers and customers and how you will contact them.

Your building

  • Install shutters and secure items that cannot be brought inside.

  • Move equipment and inventory off the floor and away from windows.

Construction sites

When a tropical storm warning or hurricane watch is issued, licensed contractors must secure their job sites and fasten down or remove anything that could become airborne. See Miami-Dade's construction site preparedness guidance.
