The Village of Pinecrest was recently featured on Local 10 News for its leadership in humane wildlife management. The story takes residents inside our Peacock Mitigation Program, where we work with avian veterinarian Dr. Don Harris, one of the few specialists in South Florida trained to perform these procedures.

The segment shows how the Village is using minimally invasive sterilization to humanely stabilize the peacock population. Birds are sedated, the procedure is quick, and they recover safely before being released back into the wild. Because peacocks are highly territorial, they generally remain in the same area but are no longer able to reproduce.

The program has now expanded to include both males and females to better manage long-term population growth.

To track progress, treated birds are marked with identification bands so you can spot them in the neighborhood:

  • Blue Bands: Sterilized males
  • Red Bands: Sterilized females
