ICMA Sustainability Initiatives Award
Published on November 06, 2025
The Village of Pinecrest is honored to receive national recognition from ICMA for our sustainability initiatives. Village Manager Yocelyn Galiano accepted the award, which celebrates the success of our composting program, the Everglades Earth Cycle Project, and the Floating Flower Islands Initiative.
This award highlights the success of the first free, resident-inspired residential composting program in Miami-Dade County. The project began when a community member suggested it to Council Member Shannon del Prado. Together, we have diverted 151,000+ pounds of food waste from landfills since launch (roughly the equivalent of 20 Land Rovers) since 2024, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping to restore our local ecosystem, in partnership with Love the Everglades, Fertile Earth Worm Farm, and Miami-Dade County District 7 Commissioner Raquel Regalado.
The Floating Flower Islands initiative, in partnership with Green Thumb Strategies, has significantly reduced the invasive hydrilla plant in our canals, making Biscayne Bay healthier. Manatees have even been sighted in our Pinecrest canals!
