FPL Grid Hardening Work Underway in Pinecrest
Published on September 15, 2026
If you’ve noticed FPL crews removing old wooden utility poles around the Village, it’s part of a larger, statewide effort to strengthen Florida’s electrical grid and make it more resilient during hurricanes and severe weather.
When FPL refers to a “hardening project,” it generally means strengthening existing portions of the electrical distribution system to make them more resistant to hurricanes, high winds, falling vegetation and other causes of outages.
For overhead lines, that can include replacing older poles with concrete, steel or stronger wood poles, installing additional poles to shorten the distance between poles, upgrading conductors and other equipment, and rebuilding portions of the line to meet higher wind-loading standards.
FPL says the goal is not only greater storm resilience, but also improved everyday reliability.
Here in the Village, FPL has recently been removing older wooden powerline poles as part of this ongoing work. FPL is also continuing its Storm Secure Underground Program (SSUP), converting overhead neighborhood distribution lines to underground systems to help reduce tree-related outages.

FPL also performs vegetation management year-round, trimming and clearing trees along thousands of miles of power lines.
Residents have a role, too. Please keep trees on your property properly trimmed and away from power lines to help reduce the risk of outages and improve storm resilience.
These improvements are an important part of preparing our community for Florida’s next storm.
